Resonance Parry System — Yellow & Red Indicators Explained

Master Resonance's parry and dodge system. Learn yellow parryable attacks, red unblockable indicators, blocking, and counterattack timing.

How the Parry System Works

The parry system is the defensive cornerstone of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy combat. When enemies prepare an attack, a visual indicator appears on or near their weapon: a yellow glow means the strike can be parried with a well-timed tap of the parry button, instantly opening the attacker for a counterattack. A red glow means the attack is unblockable and must be avoided with a dodge roll that grants brief invincibility frames.

Preview demonstrations at IGN hands-on sessions and the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 consistently showed this two-state indicator system across all enemy types, from basic island soldiers to elite guardians in later chapters. The clarity of the telegraphing allows players to focus on rhythm and pattern recognition rather than guessing which attacks can be blocked.

On PlayStation 5, DualSense adaptive triggers may add tactile resistance during parry and block inputs, though final implementation could change before the August 27, 2026 launch. PC players use Q for parry and block, while console players map the action to L1 or LB depending on platform.

Parry vs Block vs Dodge

Parrying is an active, high-reward defensive option. A successful parry interrupts the enemy's animation, staggers them briefly, and allows Sophia to chain a light attack or setup a dagger critical strike. The timing window is generous enough for newcomers but tight enough that late-game enemies with feint patterns will punish lazy parry attempts.

Blocking by holding the parry button reduces incoming damage from sustained assaults and multiple simultaneous attackers. However, blocks do not stagger enemies and chip damage still accumulates over time. Guard-breaking kicks from enemies or Sophia's own kick button can shatter a held block, making passive defense a temporary solution at best.

Dodging is mandatory against red-indicator attacks. These unblockable strikes include overhead smashes, sweeping area attacks, and certain boss phase transitions shown in preview chapter 4 footage. Dodge rolls also reposition Sophia for backstab opportunities and grappling hook setups detailed in our grappling hook combat guide.

Advanced Parry Techniques

Skilled players can parry into immediate skill activations once Resonance Points unlock abilities like Echo's Return — a counter that sends a shockwave through nearby enemies — or Heroic Surge, which temporarily boosts attack speed after a successful parry chain. These upgrades transform parrying from a defensive crutch into an offensive engine.

Enemy feints complicate mid-game encounters. Some soldiers begin a yellow-indicator windup, then cancel into a red-indicator strike if Sophia attempts an early parry. Learning to wait for the committed animation frame before pressing parry separates consistent performers from those who eat unnecessary damage. The skill tree guide recommends early investments in parry-related nodes for players who prefer aggressive counterattack playstyles.

Pair parry mastery with weapon knowledge from our weapons and swords guide. Different collectible swords may alter parry recovery speed or counterattack damage, giving build-specific advantages during the seven missable blade hunts scattered across Minotaur's Island.

Platform Parry Bindings

Each platform maps parry inputs differently while preserving identical mechanics. PC players tap Q to parry and hold Q to block. PlayStation 5 players use L1 with the same tap-hold distinction. Xbox Series X|S players use LB. Full binding tables appear on our PC controls, PS5 controls, and Xbox controls pages.

Regardless of platform, the visual language remains consistent: yellow means parry, red means dodge. This universal design makes cross-platform guides like this one directly applicable whether you play on Game Pass, Steam, or PlayStation 5.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a yellow attack indicator mean?

Yellow indicates a parryable attack. Tap the parry button at the moment of impact to deflect the strike and counterattack.

What does a red attack indicator mean?

Red indicates an unblockable attack. You must dodge roll to avoid damage — blocking or parrying will fail.

Can all enemies be parried?

Most human enemies use parryable attacks, but large mythological creatures and certain boss phases rely primarily on red-indicator strikes requiring dodges.

Is parry timing the same as Requiem?

No. Requiem had no parry system. Resonance introduces an entirely new melee defensive layer inspired by action games like Ghost of Tsushima.

Do parry skills require Resonance Points?

Basic parrying is available from the start. Advanced parry abilities like Echo's Return require spending Resonance Points in the skill tree.

Can I parry projectiles?

Preview footage has not confirmed projectile parrying. Ranged threats are typically handled with dodges, cover, or grappling hook pulls.
